Best Indoor Attractions in Chicago
I have been living in Chicago since 2004. In the beginning I never liked cold days, but slowly later on I adapted to adjust with the cold days and enjoy them different ways.
But for those who are still not comfortable with spending outdoor during the cold days, you can consider my following recommendations on best indoor attractions in Chicago for cold weather days.
I love the fact that our Windy City has so many indoor attractions that can help you enjoy winter days while exploring the city’s most popular attractions and landmarks.
Whether you are looking for a weekend getaway in Chicago during winter season, or local live here for longer period of time, my recommended indoor attractions in Chicago will help you enjoy the winter in Chicago.
Money-Saving Tip: Bundle your tickets with a Go City Chicago Pass or a Chicago CityPASS. Both passes include many of the attractions listed in my recommended indoor attractions. And, of course it can save you up to 50% off regular prices!
1. The Field Museum of Natural History

The Field Museum of Natural History is one of my favorite museums in Chicago. I have visited it few times as whenever younger family with younger kids visited me, this museum was on my top of the list for kids.
Bur for me, I feel that it is perfect place for kids to learn and have fun at the same time. Sue the T. Rex is one of the best exhibit at the museum.
Included with: both Go City Chicago Pass and Chicago CityPASS.
Tip: If you are looking to save time on traveling then combine your visit with nearby attractions like the Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium. These three are located within a few minutes’ walk on same Museum Campus.

2. Shedd Aquarium
Shedd Aquarium is the best aquarium in Chicago. Believe me, when it’s snowing outside then this indoor aquarium is your ticket to enjoy the underwater world in warm indoor set up. You will have great time enjoying vibrant coral reefs, penguins, sea lions, and jellyfish!
Included with: both passes (Go City & CityPASS).
I strongly believe that for families with kids can have great time at this indoor aquarium. This place is perfect if you decide to pair it with the nearby Field Museum for a full “museum campus” adventure.

3. Adler Planetarium

Chicago weather is cloudy and gloomy majority of the time during winter days. If you enjoy viewing stars in clear sky at night, then same kind of experience you will have at the Adler Planetarium.
The Adler Planetarium also features many interactive exhibits in which you will learn the history of space exploration.
Included with: both Go City Chicago Pass and Chicago CityPASS.
This is also one of the best skyline photo spots in Chicago. So don’t forget your camera for that dreamy winter-sunset view.

4. The Art Institute of Chicago

Escape the cold by wandering through masterpieces at the Art Institute of Chicago, consistently ranked one of the top art museums in the world. From Monet’s Water Lilies to Grant Wood’s American Gothic, this museum is a cozy, cultural retreat right in the Loop.
If you are one of those art lovers then the Art Institute of Chicago is your first choice. You will have great time exploring the masterpieces at the Art Institute of Chicago.
Personally, I felt that you will have great time exploring varieties of exhibits. Here you will enjoy exploring from Monet’s Water Lilies to Grant Wood’s American Gothic. In other words, this museum is a cozy and cultural retreat right in the Loop.

Don’t rush through exhibits. Make sure to take your time, warm up, and maybe grab a latte from the museum café overlooking Millennium Park.

5. Garfield Park Conservatory & Lincoln Park Conservatory
Winter days after fall season are very dry looking as in Chicago we miss the greenery that we have enjoyed during summer season.
But at Garfield Park Conservatory you will experience the totally different green paradise. It is bigger in size but also Lincoln Park Conservatory is equally beautiful as well.
These indoor gardens are filled with tropical plants, cacti, and waterfalls. I would say these places are perfect to boost your mood on a chilly day.
Best of all? Both conservatories are free!

6. Museum of Illusions Chicago
This downtown favorite is a fun, mind-bending escape from the cold. The Museum of Illusions offers optical tricks, photo ops, and interactive exhibits that play with perspective. I would say it is perfect for couples, families, or Instagram lovers.

Plan for 1–2 hours here, then grab a warm drink nearby to keep your day cozy.

7. Chicago Children’s Museum at Navy Pier
If you’re traveling with kids then I recommend Chicago Children’s Museum. It is one of the best indoor family attractions in the city. This museum is located inside Navy Pier. Children’s Museum has many kids friendly exhibits including climbing structures and creative play zones.
After exploring the museum you can take advantage of Navy Pier’s indoor dining and shopping.

8. Chicago Theatre, Comedy & Live Performances
For those who are looking for something different ways to entertain during cold days then they can warm up night with a show!
Chicago’s performing arts scene is at its peak in winter. See a musical at the Chicago Theatre, catch improv at Second City, or laugh at a stand-up show in Lincoln Park.
For something different I would recommend to check out winter film festivals or live jazz at Green Mill Lounge.
9. Aire Ancient Baths Chicago
This is completely different relaxing thing to do in Chicago during winter. Especially when you’re tired of sightseeing and need a cozy escape.
I recommend to relax at any spa or bath houses in Chicago. Personally, I enjoyed the vibes at Aire Ancient Baths in Chicago.
If you are looking for something like this then unwind at Aire Ancient Baths in River West. The candle-lit atmosphere, warm thermal pools, and massages inspired by Roman and Ottoman traditions make it one of Chicago’s most relaxing indoor experiences.
Perfect for couples or solo relaxation. I would say it is perfect for anytime of the year but also after a long day of sightseeing in Chicago.
10. Indoor Games, Bowling & Escape Rooms
Keep things fun and active without worrying about cold!
- Lucky Strike Chicago (downtown) – classic bowling and cocktails.
- Escape Rooms like Fox in a Box or The Escape Game Chicago. It is perfect place to have great time solving puzzles with friends.
- Arcades & Game Bars – I recommend Headquarters Beercade or Emporium for vintage games and drinks.
